Giving Back: 9 Charities We Love

| Friday December 3, 20107 comments

In the hustle and bustle of holiday shopping, it can be easy to forget those who are less fortunate.  Thankfully, many charities are pairing their products with great causes and offering a menu of specific projects you can support!  It truly is the gift that keeps on giving.

Here are a few of the charities near and dear to our hearts at ChickAdvisor HQ:

Gifts that Give Back
Buy a gift from FEED Projects, and your purchase will directly fund meals for kids at home and around the world.  Purchasing this Haiti tote ($35) will feed 50 Haitian school kids.

The Hunger Site's products also fund meals (among other projects), like this 'Rising Every Time We Fall' pewter cord bracelet ($16.95) that will feed 25 kids.

MAC's AIDS Fund will donate the proceeds from every MAC Viva Glam Lipstick and Lipglass to AIDS research.

Ten Thousand Villages is a Fair Trade store that carries everything from this Embroidered Star Silk Scarf ($24) to paper products, chocolate, coffee, and home decor.

Our Charity Picks

Jen's Pick: KIVA
Lend your money to a 3rd-world entrepreneur through microfinance group KIVA, and you'll help alleviate poverty while earning interest on your investment.

Claire's Pick: Red Cross
Donate to the Red Cross general fund to be used where most needed, or adopt a specific project to support like Emergency Shelters for victims of natural disasters.

Hafsa's Pick: ICNA
Like the Red Cross, ICNA offers general or specific projects you can support, including the Pakistan Flood Relief effort.

Ali's Pick: MCC
MCC is also involved in disaster relief and other worthy projects.  You can donate to a fund or purchase specific supplies for people in need, including the AIDS Caregiver Kit.

Cathy's Pick: Yellow Brick House
Yellow Brick House is currently accepting donations of personal care products and Christmas gifts for the women and children seeking refuge from domestic violence.

Which cause will you be supporting this holiday season?

I'm with Hafsa on the fav charity, I think ICNA is doing a fantastic job bringing all forms of help to various causes. Everything from Chile, Haiti earthquake relief to donating zakat to more causes worldwide, to family counselling... they definitely have a broad reach!

Yellow Brick House is a very close second. If ever I have enough money I'd love to open a proper women's shelter in a 3rd world country that really needs it.

I would shop Ten Thousand Villages even if it weren't a fair trade store - their merchandise is always fun to look through!

AllieLD, I totally agree. I love supporting them by buying Eat My Words cupcakes. They are soooo good and the funds support the Steven Lewis Foundation:

I'm a big supporter of The Stephen Lewis Foundation. Mr. Lewis is an impressive speaker on the subject of AIDS around the world (but especially in Africa) and they work tirelessly to deliver funds right to the people through grassroots initiatives.

Alex and I are supporting MCC and World Vision right now but I have to say that what Kiva is doing is amazing. I absolutely love that idea because it helps people create jobs, which will benefit them long term.
