How To Wear Blue Eyeshadow (Plus 22 To Try)

Posted by Tasha | Monday June 20, 201121 comments

Blue is everywhere these days: blue sky, blue water...blue eye shadow. It’s a tough colour to wear, but when you use it properly it’s a stunning way to add some colour to your look this summer. So ChickAdvisor asked Covergirl make-up artist Greg Wencel to give us some tips on how to go blue.

There's a myth that only blue-eyed girls can wear blue eye shadow, but whom does it look best on?
"Actually, blue shadow looks great on any eye colour - whether you've got blue, brown, green or hazel eyes, don’t be afraid to test it out."

How do you avoid looking like you stepped out of a time-machine from the '80s?
"When it comes to capturing the look, stay away from wearing too many colours at once, that goes for face and eyes. On the eyes use a solid wash of colour—two shades at the most. Make sure to keep it simple for the face and stay away from using blush in pastels and bright or bold tones, that means no vivid pinks."

How can colour-shy ladies work the trend into their make-up routine?

"A great way to introduce colour to your makeup routine is to dash liner in a solid colour close to the lash line. This way you are still making a statement without being too loud—try CoverGirl LiquilineBlast in Blue Boom. With LiquilineBlast, you'll get all the intensity and staying power of a liquid with the ease and blendability of a waterproof pencil. Use the liner for intense definition or smoke-it-out with the built-in smudger end for a subtle, smoky-eye look."

How do you create a dramatic evening look with blue eye shadow?

"Start by using a cream shadow as a base, this will make your smoky eye easier to blend, more vivid and last longer. The CoverGirl Smoky ShadowBlast in Tempest Blue has two different, specially contoured ends that  make it easy to create a bold, colourful, smoky eye. Next, rim your entire eye with a liner pencil, such as CoverGirl Perfect Point Plus Eyeliner in Charcoal and finish add a few coats of mascara to top and bottom lashes. To take it up a notch, try a blue mascara my fave is CoverGirl LashBlast Fusion—the fiberstretch formula and over-sized brush make every little lash bigger, fuller, longer-looking and more dramatic."

What should the rest of your makeup look like when you're wearing highly pigmented blue shades on your eyes?

"Keep the rest of your look understated, you want all the focus to be on your eyes and the rest of your makeup should contrast the cool shades of blue so keep it warm nude, soft and neutral."

Forgot to say, I have some of these products, one of them being that CoverGirl smokey shadow blast double ended stick and really hate it. I bought every color they had and want to throw all of them in the garbage. I ended up calling CoverGirl and complaining, so they sent me a refund and some vouchers for other free products to try. There are far better products on the market which are cheaper and more pigmented, which also don't crease.

The L'Oreal Infallible is a spectacular product. Every color it comes in is seriously beautiful and super-pigmented. A little goes a long way and it has incredible sheen to it. Don't like any of the Lancome shadows I have. They're very dodgy as far as their quality when compared to other brands. There are far better products on the market.

I thought the same thing before, takoda, until I started using blues with browns and other neutrals. It looks great and now I absolutely LOVE my blues! Just picked up Navy Blue shadow from Gosh in Shoppers Drug Mart the other day and am absolutely loving it to death. I also often use bright blues and bright blue greens to lightly line my lower lid before mascara, which looks really good without being over the top at all. Or smudging darker blues and greens over my dark brown wetliner. It's a good way to break yourself into using those colors before going all out with them.

I love the idea of this but I seriously doubt I can wear a blue eyeshadow. Even a blue shirt can wash me out! My skin tone is too warm to pull off blue make-up.

Someone must teach me how to wear these! I love how Ginnifer Goodwin did it at the corners, but when I tried, it just looked super sloppy! I had to change it into a dark blue smokey eye instead. gah!

I love blue eye shadows, I actually wear them fairly often. I really like that Lancome quartet of blue shadows- I am looking forward to scooping that up!

I always feel very retro when I wear light blue shadows, like I should be in Catch Me If You Can. But I love really saturated royal blue liner done in a cat eye. Swoon!
