Surviving Breast Cancer (and what you can do to help!)

Recently we told you about a fundraiser for an important cause, specifically the Shoppers Drug Mart Weekend to End Women's Cancers. This 2-day walk through scenic Toronto in September directly benefits women's cancer research and patient care at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.

Why should this matter to you? Statistics tell us that 1 in 9 Canadian women will develop breast cancer at some point in their lives, so chances are either you or someone you love has been affected by it. Two years ago I had a bad scare when my doctor told me my very first mammogram had "abnormalities". I'm thankful to tell you that it turned out to be a harmless cyst, but it was a wake-up call nonetheless.

We want to take this opportunity to share about one of the brave women who participated in a recent Walk. Here is her story:

I’m walking for my mom and myself who are survivors, and my daughter as well…And my two best friends, we decided we were going to do the Walk together.

This is my fifth year, I was pregnant my first year. This time I’m 38 weeks pregnant - I’m really excited. Doing this walk has been really special, the day before he’s going to be born.

I was 36 when I was diagnosed. I didn't think it would happen so young. It’s really hard, when you’re that young and you have young kids. The first thing that goes through your mind is, what about my children?

I definitely feel a special connection to the Princess Margaret Hospital. The doctors there are amazing. You don’t really feel like you’re in a hospital, it’s the best situation you can have.

Since I've been diagnosed, my daughter says to me, “Mommy, I don’t want to become an adult, 'cuz I don’t want a booby infection.” And I look at her and say, “You don’t have to worry about that, because by the time you’re an adult we’ll have a cure for this,” and you know, I want to make that come true. I hope that this walk will be obsolete for my daughter.

This year's event is taking place on September 7 and 8, 2013 in Toronto. If you are interested in participating, please click the image below to register now.

For more information about the Walk, read this article or click here to visit the event website.

Have you done this event in past years? Or have you been affected by breast or gynecological cancer? Join us to discuss!

In 2003 i had the idea to register to the dragon boat races,
my oncologist thought it would tire me to much.
I didn't get in to it!
